What I wish someone had told me about eating on Ozempic

What I wish someone had told me about eating on Ozempic

Os melhores alimentos para comer no Ozempic. O que priorizar para manter resultados.

The first month on Ozempic felt like a miracle. I was not hungry. I could walk past the office vending machine without wanting to cry. I thought this was going to be easy. Lose weight, feel better, done. I was very, very wrong about that.

For the first two months, I felt almost invincible. No hunger, no food noise, lost nearly five kilos without trying. I genuinely thought I had found the answer. What I did not realize was that behind that quiet, comfortable feeling, my body was quietly depleting itself. I was eating, but I was not nourishing myself. And that distinction would change everything about how I approach this medication.

The wake-up call I did not see coming

By month three, things started to go sideways. Hair falling out in the shower, nails breaking at the slightest pressure, a kind of exhaustion that had nothing to do with how much I slept. I woke up tired. I worked tired. I went to bed tired. My body was running on empty even though I was eating every day, or at least I thought I was.

I went to a functional medicine doctor and she ran a full panel. The results came back and confirmed what I had been trying to ignore: low ferritin, insufficient vitamin D, protein deficiency showing in my hair analysis. She was direct about it: I was nutritionally devastated. She looked at me and said something that has stayed with me every day since: Ozempic does not nourish you. You still have to do that part yourself. I had been doing everything wrong while thinking I was doing everything right.

That conversation fundamentally changed my approach. The medication had taken away physical hunger, but my body's nutritional needs had not gone away. I needed to relearn eating with intention, and that required a level of attention and intentionality that nobody had prepared me for when I started this journey.

    Why protein became non-negotiable

My doctor was unambiguous: protein had to be my number one priority. Not because of some trendy diet culture, not for aesthetics, but because Ozempic can cause muscle loss if you do not actively work to prevent it. Losing muscle mass is the worst outcome when you are trying to lose weight. You step on the scale and the number goes down, but what you are actually losing is tissue your body needs to function properly.

I started putting protein first at every single meal. Grilled chicken breast, baked salmon, eggs, cottage cheese. At first it felt mechanical, like I was following a formula rather than eating food. But it quickly became automatic. I would look at my plate and the first thing I would see was the protein. Everything else came second.

PeptPro's meal scanner was transformative during this period. I would scan my meals and see exactly how much protein I was actually getting each day. Frequently I thought I had eaten well, that I had consumed sufficient protein, and the app would show me I was well below what my body needed. Without the meal scanner in PeptPro, it would have taken me much longer to understand this pattern and correct it. That visibility into my own nutrition was something I simply did not have before.

    Vegetables surprised me

I was a salad hater. Full stop. I grew up hearing that vegetables were boring, that greens were for sick people, that real food had flavor and texture. I had spent decades eating what tasted good, not what was good for me. That mindset followed me everywhere and Ozempic finally broke that cycle in a way I never expected.

Vegetables need to be your best friends when you are on this medication. They provide satiety without adding empty calories. You can eat a generous portion of broccoli or spinach and your body will feel satisfied without you having overdone it on total calories. This matters on Ozempic because you want every bite to count nutritionally.

I discovered that I genuinely like steamed broccoli with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and lemon. It is not glamorous, it is not exciting, but it works. Grilled zucchini with salt and pepper. Roasted cauliflower with turmeric. Sautéed spinach with garlic. These things became part of my regular rotation and I actually enjoy them now, not because I am pretending or forcing myself. Ozempic recalibrated my taste buds in a way I never thought possible and suddenly vegetables had flavor that I had been missing my whole life.

PeptPro's hydration tracking was also a revelation. I discovered I was drinking perhaps half the water my body actually needed. On Ozempic, hydration is not optional. Dehydration causes constipation, dizziness, fatigue that does not make sense. When I started getting reminders to drink water through the app, everything became easier. Within a few days I noticed a real difference in energy and mood.

Healthy fat is not the enemy

I also took a long time to accept that healthy fat is not the enemy. I spent years hearing that fat makes you fat and that belief was deeply embedded in my thinking. But your body needs fat to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, to maintain balanced hormones, for proper brain function. On Ozempic, eating healthy fat actually helped me stay fuller longer because it slows gastric emptying.

Avocado became a daily habit. Brazil nuts, a handful in the morning. Olive oil on everything I cooked. Grass-fed butter instead of vegetable oil. These changes seemed small but made a significant difference in my satiety and in the quality of my skin and hair, both of which had suffered during the months of nutritional depletion.

The mistakes I made along the way

I am not going to pretend that everything was smooth after I understood what I needed to do. There were weeks when I ate only crackers and fruit because that was what was easy. There were days when I forgot to eat entirely and then could not understand why I was irritable and exhausted. Ozempic requires a different kind of attention to food. It is not anxiety-driven hunger, it is quiet hunger that you only notice when you are already depleted.

Apple Health integration through PeptPro was essential because it showed me patterns I would never have caught on my own. The app pulled sleep data, activity data, and I could see correlations. I saw that on days I slept poorly, appetite came back stronger the next day even with Ozempic. I saw that on high-stress days, I automatically craved carbohydrates even without physical hunger. Sleep and stress were silent saboteurs of my progress and I had no idea until I saw the data laid out in front of me.

The one concrete thing I can tell you

If I had to make a short list of what actually moved the needle for me, it would be these five things I actually eat regularly now, not as a diet but as actual food I genuinely like:

    • Grilled chicken breast or salmon fillet as the foundation of every main meal
    • Steamed or roasted broccoli, spinach and zucchini as my go-to vegetables
    • Greek yogurt with a handful of nuts as a satisfying snack
    • Whole eggs, not just egg whites, for complete protein
    • Avocado and olive oil for healthy fats that actually keep me full
That is not a diet plan. That is just what I actually eat now because I found versions I genuinely enjoy and that fit into my actual life with a family and a job and limited energy for elaborate meal preparation.

What I want you to take away

Ozempic is not permission to eat anything. Your body still needs nutrients, vitamins, minerals, protein, healthy fat. The difference is that now you have the chance to choose what goes on your plate with more calm, without compulsive hunger dictating your choices every moment. You have agency. Use it with intention and knowledge.

Prioritize protein. Eat vegetables in quantity. Do not fear healthy fat. Drink water like it is your job. Sleep well. And if you, like me, struggle to know whether you are eating enough and the right things, use an app. PeptPro has meal scanning, Apple Health integration and hydration tracking. It is a simple tool that makes a real difference in your daily life and in your long-term results with this medication.
