Prevention and Management Strategies

You cannot eliminate all risk, but you can take steps that reduce the severity and support recovery.

Nutrition is the foundation. Prioritizing protein at every meal gives your body the building blocks it needs. A serving of lean meat, fish, eggs, or legumes with lunch and dinner moves you toward the 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight that most adults need. During active weight loss, some practitioners recommend going higher, up to 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram.

Iron and zinc deserve attention. Red meat, spinach, lentils, and pumpkin seeds are food sources of iron. Oysters, beef, and chickpeas provide zinc. If blood tests show deficiency, supplementation under medical supervision corrects it faster than food alone. Never start high-dose supplements without lab confirmation, because excess iron carries its own risks.

Gentle hair care matters during the shedding phase. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the scalp. Reduce heat styling. Switch to a wide-tooth comb for detangling. The goal is to minimize unnecessary mechanical stress on fragile strands.

Stress reduction has a biological component here. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can push more hair follicles into telogen. Practices that lower baseline stress, whether it is walking, breathing exercises, or adequate sleep, create a better environment for hair recovery.

If the shedding lasts longer than six months, that is another reason to make an appointment. Prolonged telogen effluvium can sometimes mask underlying issues that need targeted treatment.

How to Track Hair Loss
