When food takes up less space on your plate, micronutrients run short too.
GLP-1 reduces hunger and food noise, which is exactly what makes the treatment work. But eating less also means reducing the intake of vitamins and minerals the body cannot store in large quantities. Iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B12, vitamin D. All of these nutrients depend on regular intake through food, and when you eat less, the source shrinks.
Why it matters during treatment
Weight loss itself increases certain nutritional needs. The body in the process of losing weight needs more nutrients per kilogram of lean mass maintained. If you are losing weight with GLP-1, your body is in reorganization, and metabolic reorganization requires nutrients as cofactors.
Some signs you may be deficient:
Persistent fatigue that does not improve with rest deserves investigation. Hair loss outside the normal range, weak nails, wounds that take a long time to heal. Tingling in hands or feet may indicate low B12 or magnesium. Muscle aches without apparent cause can come from low potassium or magnesium. Mood changes, irritability, or difficulty concentrating also appear frequently.
None of these symptoms, in isolation, means deficiency. But when two or more appear together, it is worth asking your doctor for tests.
Tests that make a difference
A basic blood panel covers a lot of ground. Ferritin and hemoglobin for iron. Vitamin D 25-OH. Serum B12. Serum zinc. Magnesium. These tests are accessible and can be requested by your primary care doctor. The ideal is to do an assessment before or shortly after starting treatment and repeat it in three months.
In PeptPro you can save your test results and track changes over time. Write down the date of each test and the values — the trend matters more than a single reading. Download here.
Strategic eating
Supplements are not always necessary. Often, adjusting food intake solves the problem. Iron-rich foods: red meat, lentils, spinach. Zinc: oysters, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas. Magnesium: almonds, avocado, banana. B12: mostly from animal sources, so people following a plant-based diet need medical supervision for supplementation.
Iron absorption improves with vitamin C, so squeezing lemon on your salad or having an orange for dessert helps. Avoiding coffee and black tea at the same meal as iron also makes a real difference.
If you notice that certain symptoms appear or worsen on specific days of the week, there may be a food pattern. In PeptPro you log what you eat with the meal scanner, and you can see the relationship between food and how you are feeling.
Supplementation when needed
In some cases, supplementing is necessary. People with dietary restrictions, those who already had deficiency before starting treatment, or those losing weight very rapidly may benefit from supplementation guided by test results.
Never start taking a supplement on your own without talking to your doctor. Megadoses of some vitamins can cause problems, and excess iron has serious consequences.
PeptPro helps you keep supplement records alongside the rest of your tracking. GLP-1 dose, symptoms, food, and test results — all in one place. Find out more here.
