Proper storage of GLP-1 medications is one of those areas where small mistakes can reduce how well the treatment works, and many patients are not aware of the details.
Temperature requirements
Unopened pens or vials that are in long-term storage need refrigeration at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. This is the same temperature range as a standard home refrigerator. Freezing is not acceptable, as it can damage the medication structure.
Once you start using a pen, the rules change. Most GLP-1 pens can be stored at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, for a limited period. For Ozempic, for example, the pen in use lasts up to 56 days at room temperature. For Mounjaro, it is 30 days. These time limits exist regardless of whether the medication looks different.
What room temperature actually means
Room temperature is not the same as leaving your medication in a hot car or near a window with direct sunlight. Room temperature means a controlled indoor environment, typically between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, away from heat sources.
Leaving medication in a car on a summer day can easily exceed 40 degrees, which can degrade the medication even if it looks fine. This is one of the most common storage mistakes.
Travel considerations
When traveling, use an insulated medication case with a cool pack. Do not put the medication directly on an ice pack because freezing is as damaging as overheating. The goal is to keep it in the 2 to 8 degree range during travel.
Most airlines allow GLP-1 medications in carry-on luggage with a letter from your doctor. Checking with your airline beforehand avoids problems at security.
Signs of compromised medication
If the liquid inside your pen looks cloudy, discolored, or has particles floating in it, do not use it. Clear to slightly off-white is normal for most GLP-1 medications. Anything that looks different from when you first opened it warrants calling your pharmacy.
An unusual odor or a pen that has been stored incorrectly, even if it looks fine, may have reduced potency.
