When appetite drops with GLP-1 use, it is common to eat less without realizing it. That reduction in calorie intake, even when intentional and guided, poses a risk to muscle mass. The body can break down lean tissue for energy, especially without sufficient stimulus to preserve it. Resistance training is the most efficient way to signal to the body that muscle needs to be maintained.

What resistance exercise does differently

While cardio burns calories during the activity, resistance training elevates metabolism for hours after the session. That happens because muscle is metabolically active tissue. The more muscle mass you carry, the more energy your body spends at rest. Building or preserving muscle while losing fat is the path to a result that lasts.

For people on GLP-1 therapy, this point is especially relevant. The medication makes weight loss easier, but it does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Without the right stimulus, some of the weight lost can be lean mass. Resistance training prevents that outcome.

How to start with no prior experience

Going to the gym every day is not necessary. Two to three sessions per week of 30 to 45 minutes already produce meaningful benefits. Squats, bench press, rows, and deadlifts are examples of this type of exercise.

Starting with light load and focusing on technique reduces injury risk and ensures you are actually working the right muscle. A certified trainer can build a safe, progressive initial routine.

If the gym is not an option, bodyweight alternatives exist: push-ups, squats, planks, and raises. Even a one-liter water bottle can serve as initial load for upper-body exercises.

Timing tip

Some users prefer to train the day after their weekly injection, when appetite is most suppressed. Others prefer to train on days when they eat more normally to have energy for a solid session. Neither approach is wrong. Pay attention to how your body responds and adjust.
